Water Filtration Systems vs. Water Softeners: What's the Difference?

Water Filtration Systems vs. Water Softeners: What's the Difference?

While you are browsing for commercial water filters for your restaurant, hotel, or office, you will come across a variety of ways to offer customers and employees fresh, clean water. As a business owner or manager, you want to ensure that you are serving only the cleanest, safest drinking water. Therefore, it’s important to understand the difference between water softeners and water filters.

While water softeners and water filtration systems can both offer their own benefits to your business, each option comes with its own distinct functions.

How Do Water Softeners Work?

If your tap water contains a significant volume of minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and iron, you likely have what is called “hard water.” This water type is bad for your water lines as it can clog pipes and lessen the efficiency of hot water heaters. Not to mention, it can give your water a bad taste.

Hard water is never appropriate to serve a customer, let alone a staff member! But a water softening unit can help you deliver cleaner tap water to use for drinking, cooking, and even cleaning.

Do Water Softeners Filter Water?

While water softeners do remove excess minerals from tap water by replacing them with salt, the process doesn't necessarily make your tap water safe to drink. This is why your business should always consider installing a commercial water filtration system to ensure that chemicals and other harmful substances are removed from your water before you even think about serving it.

How Do Water Filters Work?

Choosing to install a water filter is essential for any business as these appliances are designed to remove impurities, chemicals, and other contaminants from tap water that water softeners (and even water purifiers) leave behind. Much of these unwanted water contaminants are carbon-based, so it is always best to use a water filter that utilizes activated carbon (oxygen-treated charcoal) to keep your drinking water clean, safe, and fresh-tasting.

Carbon water filters can be extremely effective in keeping your drinking water safe and healthy as they remove virtually all microscopic contaminants; including heavy metals, mercury, lead, arsenic, pesticides, chlorine, and even bacteria that can be especially harmful to children and pregnant women.

The Role of Activated Carbon in Water Filtration

If you want the best-tasting and cleanest water, activated carbon is your answer. The oxygen found in activated carbon “activates” it by opening tiny pores that appear between carbon atoms. These pores then absorb water contaminants. As your tap water flows through an activated carbon filter, impurities get trapped at the carbon’s surface. After this process, the water dispensed from a water filter becomes safe – and great tasting, too!

While both water filters and water softeners offer their own unique benefits, it’s crucial to know that only filtration can ensure that you are serving and cooking with the purest, cleanest water every day.
